Multiple Pistachio Recalls Due to Potential Salmonella Risk

Health Canada has announced multiple recalls of pistachio and pistachio-related products due to concerns over potential salmonella contamination. In a series of notices issued over the past two weeks, the agency has identified nine separate recalls, urging Canadians to refrain from consuming, using, selling, or distributing the affected products.

The recalls stem from an ongoing investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) linked to a foodborne illness outbreak. Health Canada emphasizes that this series of recalls may continue as the investigation progresses. In a statement, the agency noted, “The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace.”

Details of the Recalls

The most significant recall occurred on September 24, 2023, when Health Canada issued a notice for nine different pistachio products. These included raw pistachios, unsalted pistachios, pistachio kernels, and skinless pistachios, which were sold in various locations including Calgary, Edmonton, and St. Thomas, Ontario.

Following this, on September 25, another recall was announced for products containing pistachios sold at a store in Ottawa. This recall included paleo and vegan pistachio bars, baklava, and kunafa. A day later, Health Canada issued a third recall for additional products such as chocolate pistachio cake, cookies, strawberry cheesecake, and gelato available in Mississauga and Ottawa. Some of these items were also found at Loblaw and Zehrs outlets in Ontario.

A smaller recall on September 27 targeted raw pistachio kernels sold in Toronto, while another recall on September 29 involved green pistachios from a store in Brampton. The final recall of September included raspberry-flavored pistachio clusters.

The recalls extended into October, with a major notice issued on October 5 for eight pistachio products available in various locations across Ontario, including Toronto, Concord, and Thunder Bay. A smaller recall on October 6 pertained to raw pistachios sold in Ottawa.

Health Risks and Recommendations

Health Canada advises consumers to check their recall notice page regularly to determine if any purchased pistachio products are affected. If individuals experience illness after consuming these products, they are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider. Recalled items should either be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase.

The agency also highlighted that salmonella is a bacterial infection resulting from food contamination. It can be present in food that appears and smells fine but may still lead to illness. The infection poses heightened risks for children, pregnant individuals, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

According to Health Canada, “Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”

As the popularity of pistachios continues to grow in Canada, with projected sales exceeding $500 million this year, the CFIA’s ongoing investigation underscores the importance of food safety measures to protect consumers from potential health risks.
