New Brunswick Boosts Healthcare Workforce with 400 Nurses, 80 Physicians

New Brunswick has significantly bolstered its healthcare workforce over the past year, hiring more than 400 nurses and 80 permanent physicians. The province’s regional health authorities, namely Horizon Health Network and Vitalité Health Network, have reported promising trends in recruitment and retention since October 2024. These efforts have resulted in net increases of 84 physicians, 214 registered nurses, and 201 licensed practical nurses.
John Dornan, the province’s Health Minister, emphasized the importance of healthcare workers, stating, “Our health-care workers are the backbone of the health-care system, and we are tackling shortages, supporting recruitment and retention efforts, and creating workplaces where people feel respected, valued and safe.” His comments came in a news release outlining the ongoing initiatives to strengthen New Brunswick’s healthcare system.
The province aims to create a sustainable environment for healthcare professionals, essential for addressing the needs of the population. The recent hiring surge reflects a concerted effort to alleviate staffing shortages that have affected healthcare delivery in the region.
In an effort to further enhance the healthcare landscape, New Brunswick will host a summit next month focused on strengthening both healthcare and long-term care systems. This event will gather stakeholders to discuss effective strategies for improving service delivery and ensuring the health and safety of New Brunswickers.
The province’s commitment to recruiting and retaining healthcare professionals has become increasingly vital in light of growing demands for services. As healthcare systems worldwide grapple with similar challenges, New Brunswick’s proactive approach may serve as a model for other regions facing workforce shortages.
As the province continues to invest in its healthcare infrastructure, it remains focused on not only recruiting qualified personnel but also retaining them through supportive workplace initiatives. The expectation is that these efforts will lead to a more resilient healthcare system capable of adapting to future challenges.
