Nova Scotia’s Family Doctor Waitlist Declines by Over 6,500

The number of Nova Scotians registered as needing a family doctor has decreased significantly. As of October 1, 2023, the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) reported that just over 77,500 individuals are on the province’s ‘Need a Family Practice Registry.’ This marks a drop from the 84,069 recorded on September 1, 2023.
The NSHA’s recent update indicates that the change in numbers can be attributed to various factors. Newly added individuals, those who have secured a family doctor or nurse practitioner, and others who no longer require medical assistance from a family physician have all influenced the registry’s statistics. This shift reflects ongoing efforts to connect residents with healthcare providers more efficiently.
The current statistics reveal that the proportion of the population on the registry now stands at 7.3 percent. This figure highlights the persistent challenges faced by many in accessing primary healthcare in Nova Scotia, despite the recent decline.
The NSHA plans to provide another update on the registry in early November, allowing for continued monitoring of the situation. As the healthcare landscape evolves, these updates will provide crucial insights into the demand for family doctors across the province.
Efforts to address the shortage of family physicians have been a focus for Nova Scotia’s healthcare system. The NSHA continues to explore strategies to improve access to family practice services, ensuring that residents receive necessary medical care in a timely manner.
