Ottawa Braces for Hottest Day of Heat Wave Before Relief Arrives
Ottawa is preparing for its hottest day of the current heat wave, with forecasts predicting a high of 33 C on Wednesday. The humidity will make it feel even hotter, reaching a sweltering 41 C, according to Environment Canada. Residents have experienced elevated temperatures since late last week, with daytime highs recorded at the Ottawa airport of 30.1 C on Friday, 32.1 C on Saturday, 31.2 C on Sunday, and 28.9 C on Monday. By 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the temperature had already climbed to 31.3 C.
As the heat warning remains in effect for the national capital, there is hope for relief on the horizon. Environment Canada announced that a cooler airmass is expected to move in on Thursday night, potentially ending the ongoing heat event.
In light of the soaring temperatures, authorities are urging residents to be vigilant for early signs of heat exhaustion. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue. A public advisory encourages individuals to cease any strenuous activity and hydrate adequately.
Heat stroke poses a more serious risk and is classified as a medical emergency. Signs of heat stroke include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and altered consciousness. In such cases, it is vital to call 9-1-1 or seek immediate medical attention. Until help arrives, cooling the affected person by moving them to a shaded area, removing excess clothing, and applying cold water or ice packs is advisable.
While Ottawa paramedics have noted a high volume of calls in recent days, a spokesperson indicated that these calls have not been directly attributed to the heat wave. As conditions remain challenging, residents are encouraged to stay informed and take precautions to safeguard their health during this extreme weather event.
