Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Salami Results in Increased Hospitalizations

Health officials have reported an expansion of a salmonella outbreak associated with deli meats, particularly salami, sold at grocery stores and used in prepared sandwiches. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the outbreak has led to a total of 84 illnesses since April 2023, with nine hospitalizations confirmed. This marks an increase of approximately a dozen new cases and two additional hospitalizations since the agency’s last update in late June.

The infections have been traced to specific products, including Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot, and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami. In response to the outbreak, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall for these items in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba on June 10, 2023.

Most of the reported illnesses are concentrated in Alberta, where 67 individuals have fallen ill. Ontario has reported 15 cases, while Manitoba has confirmed one case. Additionally, one illness reported in British Columbia is linked to travel to Alberta.

Salmonella is a food-borne bacterial infection that can manifest several days or even weeks after exposure. Symptoms may range from mild to severe and can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant individuals, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Healthy adults may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.

The PHAC has indicated that further illnesses may still arise as the investigation continues. To assist consumers, the agency recommends checking for the following product codes associated with the recalled salami: 5035 226, 5049 226, 5020 228, 5035 228, and 5035 226.

As the situation develops, health officials are urging individuals who may have purchased these products to dispose of them and monitor for symptoms of salmonella infection. For those experiencing severe symptoms, it is advised to seek medical attention promptly.
