The Toronto Zoo has announced the euthanasia of its cherished male white lion, Fintan, following a prolonged decline in his health. The decision was made on October 6, 2023, after veterinarians had provided ongoing care for several months. Fintan, who had been a resident at the zoo for 13 years, was suffering from severe gastrointestinal issues that included nausea, vomiting, and a significant loss of appetite.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the zoo expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of Fintan. “Despite the continuous efforts of his dedicated Veterinary and Wildlife Care teams who have cared for him with exceptional skill, compassion, and love since his arrival, he recently worsened and the decision was made to say goodbye to Fintan,” the statement read.

Fintan arrived at the Toronto Zoo in 2012, alongside two female lions. His name, which translates to “little fair one,” reflects his striking appearance, particularly his “luscious mane,” which made him easily recognizable to visitors. The zoo described him as a majestic presence that touched the hearts of many, including guests, staff, and volunteers.

In the statement, the zoo highlighted Fintan’s impact: “He was the true King of the African Savanna here, and his presence will be deeply missed.” The team observed a significant deterioration in his health on the morning of his euthanasia, leading to the difficult decision.

A full post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place to investigate the “disease processes” that affected Fintan. The zoo emphasized that the loss of any animal is a poignant reminder of the need for continual learning in animal care.

As Fintan’s legacy lives on, the Toronto Zoo reflects on the joy and inspiration he brought to so many during his life, ensuring that his memory will remain a cherished part of the zoo’s history.
