She later worked at what is now known as CityNews 680 before becoming an on-air reporter with CTV. Her career also included a stint at Global News, where she co-anchored before returning to CTV as the co-host of Canada AM and later continuing her work on CTV News Channel.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, Thomson became a prominent advocate for breast cancer awareness, using her platform to educate others about the disease. Her dedication to journalism and her advocacy work earned her a lifetime achievement award from the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada in October 2024.

Throughout her career, Thomson was known for her high-profile interviews with politicians and celebrities. Notable moments included her coverage of the 2016 U.S. election and one-on-one interviews with influential figures such as Donald Trump, Shania Twain, and astronaut Chris Hadfield during his time aboard the International Space Station.
