Victoria Surgeon Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin Champions Women’s Health
Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin, a prominent surgeon in Victoria, Canada, is making significant strides in women’s health and cancer care. With a staggering statistic that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, Emmerton-Coughlin has dedicated her career to supporting those affected by this disease. Currently, breast cancer accounts for 13 percent of all cancer deaths among women, further underscoring the importance of her work.
Reflecting on her early aspirations, Emmerton-Coughlin initially dreamed of becoming an astronaut. After interning at the Canadian Space Agency and working on the Canadarm, she realized that the solitude of such a career was not what she desired. “It isn’t the same as being able to really sit with people here and interact with people and eventually to help people,” she explained.
Her commitment to patient care led her to become a surgeon, where she has positively impacted countless lives. Kristi Thomas, Emmerton-Coughlin’s professional assistant for nine years, praised her dedication. “She’s just always so thoughtful, passionate,” Thomas noted. “Everyone usually leaves the room saying, ‘Oh my god, she’s wonderful, she’s just so amazing.’”
Innovative Approaches to Cancer Care
Emmerton-Coughlin’s focus lies primarily in cancer care, and she co-established the South Island breast cancer program, a pioneering initiative that streamlines the process for women needing surgical care. “System delays are often one of the hardest parts, and so we wanted to make sure women were getting their care as efficiently as possible, and this has really allowed for that,” she stated. This program ensures that patients are matched quickly with surgeons, minimizing waiting times and improving outcomes.
Her passion for this field was ignited during her residency when she encountered a young cancer patient who was already palliative. “She taught me that there can be joy even in those darkest moments,” Emmerton-Coughlin recalled. This experience shaped her approach to patient care, emphasizing the importance of quality of life alongside treatment.
Beyond the operating room, Emmerton-Coughlin has used her platform to advocate for women’s health. At the recent Victoria Hospitals Foundation Visions Gala in November 2023, she played a crucial role in raising a record-breaking $3.7 million for local healthcare initiatives. Colleen Bronson from the Victoria Hospitals Foundation highlighted Emmerton-Coughlin’s ability to convey the impact of donor contributions, stating, “She expresses that she feels that impact every day.”
A Balanced Life and a Bright Future
Although her role as a surgeon may not carry the glamour of space exploration, Emmerton-Coughlin finds fulfillment in her work and family life. Now a 45-year-old married mother of two, she feels privileged to serve her community. “I feel blessed every day that I get to do what I do,” she shared. “We are so privileged to live on this beautiful Island.”
The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is currently running a campaign focused on women’s health. Those interested in supporting this cause can find more information on their website.
As Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin continues to champion women’s health, her innovative approaches and compassionate care are making a lasting difference in the lives of many.
