Wildfire Smoke to Impact Ottawa’s Hot Weekend Plans

The forecast for Ottawa’s long weekend features hot and humid weather, but residents should prepare for the arrival of wildfire smoke. Starting later on July 1, 2023, and continuing through the city’s Ironman competition on Sunday, Environment Canada has issued an alert warning of potential “local smoke.” This could affect air quality during outdoor activities.
The air quality health index is projected to reach a “5-moderate risk” on Saturday, increasing to a “6-moderate risk” for Saturday night and through Sunday. The temperature on Saturday is expected to peak at 27 C, with the humidex making it feel like 30 C. By Sunday, conditions will remain hot, with a forecast high of 30 C and a humidex reading of 33 C.
As competitors and spectators gather for the Ironman events, officials have cautioned that “local smoke” may be present in the morning and early afternoon hours. Sunday night will bring some cloud cover with a low of 15 C, but the weather outlook remains warm. The forecast for the following days, including Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, indicates similar temperatures around 29 C, with clouds expected but no precipitation in sight.
With the heat and smoke impacting outdoor activities, both participants and fans are advised to take precautions. Staying hydrated and monitoring air quality will be essential for safety during this active holiday weekend.
