Will County Launches New Breastfeeding Support Group, The Milk Circle
The Will County Health Department has established a new breastfeeding support group named the Milk Circle. This initiative aims to provide a welcoming environment for parents seeking assistance during the early stages of parenthood. The Milk Circle will convene on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the department’s main office located at 501 Ella Ave., Joliet, Illinois, specifically within the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) office.
To launch the group, a special kick-off meeting is scheduled for August 5, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This event will allow community members to engage with health department staff and connect with local organizations. Attendees can look forward to refreshments and door prizes during this inaugural gathering. Notably, Spanish translators will be available at the kick-off and all subsequent meetings, ensuring inclusivity for the diverse community.
Alyssa Densberger, a nutrition specialist and international board-certified lactation consultant, emphasized the importance of supporting breastfeeding families. “Supporting breastfeeding families is one of the most impactful ways we can invest in the health and well-being of our community,” she stated. Densberger, who also serves as the WIC breastfeeding coordinator, highlighted that the Milk Circle will facilitate connections among parents, allowing them to share experiences and receive valuable guidance.
Participation in the Milk Circle is open to all members of the Will County community, regardless of their involvement in any current health department programs. While RSVPs are appreciated, they are not mandatory. For inquiries or to confirm attendance, individuals can contact the health department at 779-375-5448.
This new support group represents a proactive approach to maternal and infant health, reinforcing the commitment of the Will County Health Department to foster a supportive network for families in the region.
