Young Men Face New Challenges in Defining Masculinity

Changes in societal norms are reshaping the understanding of masculinity for young men, according to author and speaker Alex Cordero. In his book, “How to be a Dude in the 21st Century,” Cordero highlights the struggles many boys face as they navigate the complexities of modern masculinity. He emphasizes that while society is evolving in ways that benefit many, young men are increasingly feeling disconnected and confused about their roles.
Cordero points out that these shifts are prompting a significant conversation about what it means to be a man today. “Boys are struggling to understand masculinity versus toxic masculinity, and I wrote this book to help them navigate their way forward,” he stated during a recent discussion on the topic.
The urgency of this conversation is underscored by insights from Gary R. Simonds, a neurosurgeon and educator, who argues in a 2024 article published in Psychology Today that “men are falling behind. Dramatically.” Simonds warns that the educational gap between male and female students is substantial and growing. This disparity could soon impact job opportunities, career success, and incomes for men.
Cordero echoes these concerns, noting that many young men show signs of disengagement. He describes a “loss of motivation” among this demographic, suggesting that they often feel idle and uninformed. This situation can lead to feelings of fear, disappointment, frustration, and embarrassment.
Cordero participated in a panel discussion as part of the Conversations That Matter series, aimed at addressing these pressing issues. The conversation seeks to provide guidance for young men to become engaged and productive members of society.
For those interested in exploring these topics further, the discussion is available online at vancouversun.com/tag/conversations-that-matter. Additionally, attendees can join a live event on October 21, 2024, focusing on B.C.’s innovation economy.
As young men grapple with these challenges, Cordero’s book offers insights and strategies to help them thrive in a modern world that demands a redefinition of masculinity. By facilitating open discussions and providing resources, there is hope for guiding boys into becoming motivated individuals who can contribute positively to an ever-evolving society.
