Algoma University Graduate Honored with Order of Canada
John Willinsky, an alumnus of Algoma University, has been appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his significant contributions to public access in research. His work through the Public Knowledge Project has been instrumental in enhancing the availability of vetted research to the public, according to a recent release.
In 1974, Willinsky was among the first 84 graduates from Algoma University. His recent honor exemplifies the university’s dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity and advancing scholarship. Interim President Sheila Embleton remarked that this appointment reflects the ongoing impact of Algoma’s academic community on the public good.
The announcement was made in December 2023, alongside the recognition of other notable figures, including entertainers Raffi and Terri Clark. In total, 80 new appointees were welcomed into the Order, highlighting a diverse range of contributions across various fields.
Willinsky’s commitment to making research accessible aligns with broader efforts to democratize knowledge. The Public Knowledge Project focuses on developing open-source tools to aid in the dissemination of research findings, ensuring that valuable information reaches a wider audience.
The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honors, awarded to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Canadian society. Willinsky’s recognition serves as a testament to the lasting legacy of Algoma University and its alumni, who continue to influence both academia and public discourse.
As Willinsky joins the ranks of notable appointees, his work exemplifies the potential of higher education to drive positive change in society. The award not only honors his achievements but also underscores the importance of public access to information in today’s world.
