Assiniboine College Student Alec Walters Honored with Prestigious Award

Assiniboine College student Alec Walters has been awarded the esteemed Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) International Student Award. The recognition took place at the Manitoba Legislative Building, where Walters was honored alongside three other exceptional international students for their academic achievements and community engagement.

Walters, who serves as the president of the college’s Students’ Association, expressed surprise at receiving the award. “I told my sister first, and she was so happy for me,” he shared. His sister, Alexia Walters, a former instructor at Assiniboine, played a pivotal role in his journey to Canada, inspiring him to pursue his education abroad.

Community Engagement and Leadership

Originally from Jamaica, Alec emphasizes the importance of community support, a value instilled in him during his upbringing. “Growing up in Jamaica taught me the value of community and being together for each other,” he reflected. His experiences in a teacher training program highlighted the significance of mutual support in overcoming challenges. “I want to bring that same energy and commitment to wellness here,” he added.

Walters is not just a remarkable student; he has become a source of inspiration within the college community. Brandy Robertson, an instructor in the Social Service Worker program, praised Walters for his exceptional drive and positivity. “His enthusiasm for learning is something that will carry him far, both in his career and in life,” she stated.

Upon his arrival in Canada, Walters faced challenges in making connections. “Making connections was my biggest challenge when I arrived in Canada,” he admitted. Encouraged by his sister, he joined the Students’ Association, which significantly transformed his experience.

Initiatives and Impact

From his initial role as the Health and Human Services representative to his current position as president, Walters has worked diligently to create an inclusive environment for all students. His efforts have been recognized by fellow Jamaican students and community members. Karen O’Gilvie, chairperson of the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts, noted that Walters embodies the spirit of the Jamaican Canadian community, where individuals strive to give back and leave a meaningful legacy.

Two key initiatives led by Walters in the Students’ Association include the Wellness Wagon, which provides stress-relief support, and events focused on men’s mental health. These programs aim to break stigmas and foster open conversations about mental health among students. His commitment to improving mental health awareness, particularly among men, has been a driving force throughout his time in the Social Service Worker program.

Now in his second year at Assiniboine, Walters continues to challenge societal norms surrounding mental health. “Winning the MCIE award has only strengthened my resolve. It makes me want to go further,” he said. His mission extends to helping others thrive, especially international students and those in need of support.

Walters encourages newcomers to embrace their journey without fear of making mistakes, emphasizing that these experiences often serve as the greatest teachers. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift, so make the most of it,” he advised.
