Batavia Food Pantry Relocates; Community Celebrates New Events

The Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Clothes Closet has officially relocated to its new permanent facility at 916 First St. as of October 1, 2023. This significant move was made possible by a $3 million Community Project Funding Grant, secured with the assistance of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood. The new 14,000-square-foot space boasts expanded storage, upgraded refrigeration capabilities, and enhanced loading docks, while maintaining the same operating hours.
Established in 1981, the Food Pantry has been a vital resource for families in Batavia for over four decades. The organization introduced the Clothes Closet in the 1990s to further support community members in need. Previously, the Pantry operated from a City-owned building on Flinn Street before temporarily relocating to Raddant Road earlier this year. A ribbon-cutting and open house event is planned for later this fall to celebrate the new facility.
Community Events Highlight Batavia’s Spirit
In addition to the Food Pantry’s relocation, the Batavia Fire Department will host an Open House on September 28 from 11:00 to 14:00 at Station 2, located at 1400 W. Main St.. This event promises a range of activities including live demonstrations, station tours, CPR lessons, free food, and giveaways. Children can participate in an obstacle course and meet Sparky the Fire Dog, while a helicopter will land as part of the festivities. Attendees can park at the south lot of Batavia High School.
Another highlight is the upcoming City of Good Energy Mural Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Celebration, scheduled for October 4 from 11:00 to 13:00. This free public event will take place in the parking lot behind the Comedy Vault on South River Street. Attendees will enjoy refreshments, a drop-in craft activity, and the opportunity to meet mural artist Amy Decker. The mural, funded through donations and produced by the Water Street Studios Public Art Initiative, exemplifies Batavia’s identity as “The City of Good Energy,” combining historical references with contemporary artistic expression.
Entertainment and Culture in Batavia
For those interested in live music, a tribute to the legendary Neil Diamond will be performed by Denny “Diamond” Svehla on September 28 from 14:00 to 15:00 in the Founders Room at the Batavia Public Library, located at 10 S. Batavia Ave.. Svehla, a seasoned performer since 1977, will present an engaging tribute to Diamond’s timeless hits, sharing stories behind the music. Attendees can register for this event at batavia.libnet.info/event/12888232.
Additionally, the Batavia Community Band will perform at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk on October 5 from 15:00 to 16:00. This free concert will feature a variety of musical styles, from marches to Broadway tunes, and is suitable for all ages. Donations to support new music are welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating.
As Batavia continues to evolve and expand its community services and events, residents can look forward to an exciting season filled with engagement, support, and celebration.
