Beachgoers Save Man in Distress During Port Stanley Emergency

A group of beachgoers and first responders acted swiftly to rescue a man in distress at Port Stanley’s Little Beach on Friday, September 29, 2023. The incident unfolded when Andrea VanWilligen, who was enjoying a day by the water with her nephew, spotted the man submerged and unresponsive after slipping off his flotation device.
VanWilligen recounted the moment to CTV News, stating, “I noticed he was submerged under water and very unresponsive. So, I approached the man and helped lift his head.” Recognizing the urgency of the situation, she called for assistance and urged others in the vicinity to contact emergency services.
Within moments, a group of bystanders converged to assist. VanWilligen noted that three individuals who were certified in CPR began providing life-saving measures immediately. The man’s wife, who had been taking a stroll along the beach, returned to find her husband being helped by the community. “When she came back, she was incredibly thankful that all the pedestrians were working so hard to help her husband,” VanWilligen said.
Emergency responders arrived approximately ten minutes after the initial call, taking over the lifesaving efforts. The man was then transported to a local hospital by EMS. As of now, his condition remains unknown.
This incident highlights the importance of community involvement in emergency situations. The quick actions of both the beachgoers and trained responders exemplify how collective effort can make a significant difference in critical moments. The collaboration among strangers not only provided immediate care but also offered emotional support to the man’s family during a distressing time.
Port Stanley, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, witnessed a powerful demonstration of human compassion and readiness in the face of an emergency.
