Bellingham Residents Choose Vancouver Airport for Travel Savings

Travelers from Bellingham, Washington, are increasingly opting for flights out of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) instead of local options. Despite the proximity of U.S. airports like Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), many residents find that flying from Vancouver can offer significant benefits, including cost savings and convenience.
A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted this trend, with several users sharing their experiences and reasons for choosing YVR. Interestingly, some travelers noted that flights from Vancouver can be cheaper than those from nearby airports such as Bellingham International Airport (BLI) or Everett’s Paine Field. This price difference often surprises those accustomed to flying domestically.
The drive from Bellingham to Vancouver airport is approximately one hour shorter than the journey to Seattle, making YVR a more appealing option for many. Still, travelers highlighted the importance of considering border wait times, which can fluctuate significantly. One user mentioned, “In our experience, the biggest variable is delays at the border, nothing to do with the airport.” They shared a recent experience where, despite having NEXUS for expedited border crossing, they faced delays due to U.S. border patrol searches.
Many Reddit users expressed a preference for YVR, with one frequent international traveler stating, “I always opt for YVR.” Comments also pointed out that parking at Vancouver’s airport tends to be more affordable than at Seattle, contributing to the overall savings for travelers.
Customer Experiences Favor Vancouver
Several users compared the two airports, noting that YVR is smaller and easier to navigate than Seattle-Tacoma. One individual stated, “It’s a great airport, much smaller and easier to get around than SeaTac.” They recounted a recent trip where they enjoyed a seamless experience at YVR, although they faced a nearly three-hour wait returning home due to border traffic.
While the majority of respondents favored YVR, some Bellingham residents mentioned successfully finding good deals departing from Seattle. This variety in preferences indicates that while Vancouver may be gaining traction, there are still travelers who appreciate the offerings at Seattle-Tacoma.
YVR’s reputation is bolstered by its performance in the 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards, where it was named the 13th best airport in the world and the top airport in North America. This recognition adds to its appeal, especially for those seeking a high-quality travel experience. The airport has also earned accolades for features like its on-site hotel, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, which was ranked fourth globally, and its art installations, which secured a seventh-place ranking worldwide.
The preference for Vancouver among Bellingham residents showcases a growing trend of cross-border travel that can provide both financial and experiential advantages. As air travel patterns evolve, Vancouver International Airport continues to attract attention for its quality and convenience, solidifying its position as a favored departure point for many travelers in the Pacific Northwest.
