Beloved Spragge Resident Horace Hurtubise Passes Away at 89

Horace Hurtubise, a cherished member of the Spragge community, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at the age of 89. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Gloria, for an impressive 55 years and leaves behind their two children, Faye and Ken, along with Ken’s wife, Mary, and his beloved granddaughter, Kayleigh.
Born on March 24, 1936, in Lavigne, Ontario, Horace was the son of the late Rene and Regina Hurtubise. He shared a close bond with his siblings, including Jean-Pierre, Paul, Robert, Marguerite Lemieux, Jacques, and Marcianne Astley, while also being predeceased by siblings Adeline Causer, Raymond, and Gaitan. The family has expressed deep appreciation for the support received from the Carlson family and numerous nieces and nephews during this time of loss.
Life and Legacy in the Outdoors
Horace was known for his love of the outdoors. Growing up on a family farm, he spent much of his life engaging in activities such as trapping and commercial fishing, often immersing himself in the beauty of nature. His passion for the outdoors extended to various roles throughout his life, including serving in fire tower watch, trailmaking, and furnace repair.
While he was often seen as a quiet individual, Horace had a playful side that enjoyed practical jokes. He kept himself busy with various projects and was known for his resourcefulness, often tinkering with different tasks around the house. A self-taught musician, he played the violin and frequently accompanied Gloria on the piano, creating cherished memories for their family.
A long-time resident of Spragge, Ontario, Horace is remembered fondly by those who knew him. His family has expressed gratitude for the care and compassion shown by the staff at Golden Birches Terrace, where he spent his final days.
Memorial Arrangements
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a graveside service scheduled for October 3, 2025, at 13:00 at Algoma Mills Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Phil Carlson, with refreshments to follow at the Algoma Mills Causeway Pavilion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Shore Health Network Foundation Longterm Care (Golden Birches Terrace) or to the Spragge Bible Church as a tribute to Horace’s life.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Menard Funeral Home, ensuring that his legacy will be honored with the dignity and respect he deserved.
