Bissell Centre’s Drive Addresses Child Health Crisis with Diapers and Formula

The Bissell Centre in Edmonton is actively addressing urgent needs for families through its “Tummies and Tushies” drive, which runs until February 23, 2024. This initiative aims to collect essential items like diapers and baby formula for families facing financial hardship. According to Scarlet Bjornson, a representative of the Centre, the demand for these necessities has surged, with the Centre currently assisting around 130 families each month.
Bjornson highlighted the challenges families face due to rising costs of living. “Affordability is a major issue in the city,” she explained during an interview with Kent Morrison on CTV Morning Live Edmonton. The need for diapers and formula is crucial for maintaining the health of children. Bjornson emphasized that when families attempt to stretch these supplies to save money, they often encounter serious health issues, including diaper rash and urinary tract infections. Additionally, extending baby formula can lead to malnutrition.
“We aim to prevent these problems and keep children as healthy as possible,” Bjornson said.
Community Response and Donation Process
The Bissell Centre has established multiple drop-off locations across Edmonton, including areas from Acheson to Sherwood Park. Donors can find a full list of these locations on the Centre’s official website, www.bissellcentre.org. Bjornson noted that while opened boxes of diapers are acceptable for donation, baby formula must be in new, sealed containers.
Families who benefit from the drive express gratitude for the support. Bjornson described the anxiety parents feel when they struggle to provide basic necessities. “There are so many things to worry about in a day, like job security and rising bills. Not being able to afford diapers and formula adds an overwhelming layer of stress,” she said. The Centre’s efforts help alleviate some of this burden, allowing families to focus on other important matters, such as employment opportunities.
Accessing Support Services
Families in need can reach out to the Bissell Centre’s family support team for assistance. Bjornson encouraged those struggling to visit the Centre and access their service hub. “We want to ensure that families know we are here to help,” she stated.
The Tummies and Tushies drive serves as a vital resource for many families in Edmonton, highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting those in need. With the ongoing challenges posed by economic pressures, initiatives like this are crucial in fostering a healthier and more secure environment for children and their families.
