Brandon Barber Mario Andino Wins National Title in Canada

Mario Andino, a barber from Brandon, Manitoba, has been crowned the Best Barber in Canada, achieving this national honor just three years after he first picked up a pair of clippers. The announcement came following the conclusion of the Wahl of Fame’s 2025 Canadian Barber of the Year contest, where Andino surpassed competitors from across the country.
In the competition, which initially garnered entries through video submissions on Instagram, Andino distinguished himself among dozens of participants. After online voting narrowed the field to six finalists, industry judges ultimately named him the top barber last week. Alongside the title, Andino received a trophy, a sponsorship of $1,000 in barbering tools, and the opportunity to serve as a brand ambassador for Wahl.
From Humble Beginnings to National Champion
Andino’s journey to this achievement began in his basement during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he practiced on friends and family using budget clippers. “I never thought I was going to represent the whole country in barbering,” Andino stated, reflecting on his unexpected rise. He will now represent Canada at a global championship in Chicago next year, competing against winners from 18 nations for the world title.
Joining Andino on the podium were two stylists from Toronto: Diego Lauro, who was named first runner-up, and Ethan Quintela, who took the second runner-up spot. The contest, organized by the international barbering brand Wahl, began with open submissions showcasing participants’ skills with the company’s tools, culminating in a final round where judges assessed the top three contestants.
Andino’s strong support from his family, clients, and the Brandon community played a crucial role in his success. The news of his victory arrived in a memorable moment; while Andino was having his hair cut by Taher Banuga, co-owner of Elevate Barbershop, they both celebrated the announcement with joy.
A Journey of Growth and Determination
Originally from Honduras, Andino immigrated to Canada 14 years ago and has lived in Brandon ever since. Prior to becoming a barber, he worked at Maple Leaf Foods but decided to pursue his passion for barbering full-time. After completing a nine-month program at H&Co Academy, he joined Elevate Barbershop in October 2024. In less than a year, he transitioned from a novice to a national champion.
Banuga praised Andino’s dedication, stating, “He came here straight out of school and has only gotten better and better. He’s hard-working, persistent, and always willing to learn.” The recognition reflects Andino’s commitment to his craft, as he invested time to create competition videos and refine his skills.
Looking ahead, Andino is already preparing for the global finals in Chicago, where he will face elite barbers from across the world. Each competitor must bring their own model and deliver their best cut live. Despite his recent success, Andino remains grounded. “Winning this doesn’t change how I see myself. I’m still at square one, working as hard as before,” he noted, acknowledging the inspiration he draws from other talented barbers.
His achievement has not only brought pride to his family in Canada but also to those in Honduras, who rallied support and votes for him during the competition. “My mom, my sister, even family back home — they were all proud and telling their friends to vote for me,” Andino shared.
With a trophy soon to be displayed at Elevate Barbershop, Andino plans to participate in more competitions, including an upcoming event in Winnipeg next spring. As he prepares for the challenges ahead, his journey serves as an inspiring testament to hard work and the pursuit of passion in the barbering profession.
