Calgary Firefighters Bring Holiday Joy to 1,600 Families
Members of the Calgary Firefighters Toy Association spread holiday joy on December 3, 2023, by hosting the 58th annual Children’s Christmas Party, which supported more than 1,600 families in need. The event took place at the TELUS Convention Centre, where local firefighters and volunteers came together to provide gifts and festive activities for children.
Tom Jukes, assistant deputy chief of operations with the Calgary Fire Department, reflected on the event’s rich history. “It started in 1945 out of Old Fire Station 3 when one of our firefighters began repairing old toys and distributing them to children in need,” Jukes explained. “In 1967, we organized the first official Christmas party, allowing children to engage with firefighters and receive gifts. Today, we continue this tradition.”
Calgary firefighters collaborate closely with local school boards and the Salvation Army to identify families who may not otherwise celebrate the holiday season. This year, attendees were able to enjoy a festive atmosphere while receiving gifts that had been generously donated.
Jukes noted, “We’ll be handing out between 4,000 to 5,000 gifts this year, ensuring that families from different backgrounds can partake in the festivities. Children get the chance to meet Santa, and they interact with various firefighters and volunteers associated with the Calgary Fire Department.”
For the firefighters, the event holds significant meaning. Jukes emphasized the importance of connecting with community members from diverse backgrounds. “Unfortunately, many people in our community are struggling, and this event provides a wonderful opportunity for our members to give back,” he said. “It allows us to make a positive impact outside of emergency situations, bringing joy to children and relief to parents during a challenging time of year.”
As families gathered for the event, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and hope. The Calgary Firefighters Toy Association’s commitment to supporting their community continues to foster a spirit of generosity and compassion, highlighting the importance of community service during the holiday season.
The legacy of the Christmas party stands as a testament to the enduring dedication of the Calgary Fire Department and its members, ensuring that the joy of the season reaches those who need it most.
