Calgary Gala Celebrates Pets and Legacy of Gaudreau Brothers
A significant event took place on Saturday evening as the Parachute for Pets organization hosted a gala fundraiser at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary. The sold-out event, known as the 11/52 Benefit Gala, attracted numerous attendees, including both current and former players from the Calgary Flames. Among the attendees were Flames ambassadors such as Mikael Backlund, Mackenzie Weegar, and Dustin Wolf.
The gala served as a platform to present the inaugural Gaudreau Pet Legacy Award, created by Guy and Jane Gaudreau in memory of their sons, Johnny and Matthew, who shared deep bonds with their pets, Bailey and Stella. “John Gaudreau was a significant supporter of Parachute for Pets,” noted founder and executive director Melissa David. She emphasized the importance of the relationship between Johnny and his dog, Bailey, stating that the bond played a crucial role in his mental well-being during his rise in the sport.
The tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew in August 2022 prompted Parachute for Pets to explore ways to honor their memory. David explained, “We thought it would be wonderful to establish a lasting tribute for John and Bailey in Parachute.” The award will recognize individuals dedicated to animal advocacy and welfare, reflecting the values held by the Gaudreau family.
In his remarks, Guy Gaudreau highlighted the significance of pets in their family. “Johnny was a big fan of dogs and animals,” he said. “All of my children share that passion. He raised his dog, Bailey, here in Calgary.” This sentiment resonated with many attendees, including Flames defenceman Mackenzie Weegar, who emphasized the evening’s focus on the positive impact of pets.
“We’re here for Melissa and supporting Parachute for Pets,” Weegar stated. He elaborated on the organization’s efforts, which include rescuing dogs, promoting adoption, and facilitating spaying and neutering. “Tonight is about the pets, and it’s been an honor to have them with us,” he added.
The gala has a broader goal of raising $100,000 to support the organization’s various programs. This financial support will enhance their capacity to assist animals in need and promote the human-animal bond that many hold dear.
