Cambridge Firefighters Launch Annual Basket Fund for Families
The Cambridge Fire Department is set to continue its long-standing tradition of supporting local families by launching the annual Basket Fund campaign. This initiative, which has been active since 1921, aims to provide assistance to families in need during the holiday season. The campaign will distribute food, gifts, and a traditional Christmas meal to approximately 300 households this year.
The initiative is driven by about 150 members of the Cambridge Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (CPFFA), along with dedicated community donors and volunteers. They play a crucial role in assembling and distributing the baskets. According to firefighter Brad Wickens, the program is targeted at lower-income families and those on disability who may struggle to afford groceries during the holidays.
“We try to give two to three meals per hamper, and we provide a frozen turkey along with eggs, bacon, bread, and various non-perishable items,” Wickens explained. “Our goal is to help these families stock their pantry a little and ensure they have a meal over Christmas.”
The Basket Fund campaign relies heavily on the commitment of firefighters, their families, and volunteers to meet the increasing demand each year. The assembly of the baskets will take place on December 19, when all food items are brought in for packing. Wickens described the process as an “assembly line,” with volunteers working together to ensure everything is prepared efficiently. The recipients will then pick up the baskets on December 20.
Residents in need of assistance can register through the Christmas Support website. Additional information on how to donate or volunteer can be found on the CPFFA’s official website. The Basket Fund campaign not only highlights the dedication of the firefighters but also reflects the spirit of community support during the holiday season.
