Canadian Walk for Veterans Set to Honor Armed Forces This Weekend

The Canadian Walk for Veterans will take place this Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Kinsmen Park in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. This event aims to raise funds for True Patriot Love, a foundation dedicated to supporting Canada’s military community. The funds will benefit local mental health programs, recovery initiatives, and essential services for veterans, service members, and their families.
A portion of the proceeds from the walk will support the River Valley Resilience Retreat (RVRR), located near St. Louis. Participants are encouraged to gather at the Kinsmen Park amphitheatre for registration at noon, with the walk commencing at 13:00, following remarks from the event organizers.
Focus on Honoring Veterans
Michelle McKeaveney, co-founder of RVRR and one of the event organizers, emphasized the intention behind the walk. “We don’t turn it into a big ceremony,” she stated. “We want to focus on the mindful walk of honoring the Canadian Armed Forces members from the past and present.” With ongoing deployments to places like Latvia, McKeaveney highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting those who serve.
Participants also have the option to join the walk virtually. Every registered participant will receive the 2025 Canadian Walk for Veterans challenge coin, uniquely designed by the veteran-owned company Sharkz Coins based in Esquimalt, B.C.
Providing Vital Support for Veterans
RVRR offers a sanctuary for individuals exposed to trauma in their professional lives, those diagnosed with PTSD, or individuals who have sustained operational stress injuries. The retreat is situated on a scenic property spanning 25.5 acres and features walking trails. “We have five cabins, so if somebody needs a quick getaway from the city and the sirens, they can come out and enjoy food, coffee and there’s always somebody who is trained in peer support available to talk and support them if they want,” McKeaveney explained.
She noted that RVRR has experienced a significant increase in clients this year compared to 2023, underscoring the growing need for such support services. McKeaveney urged families to participate in the walk, allowing younger generations to learn about the contributions of veterans. “Children are taught about Remembrance Day, and this is Remembrance Day in action,” she remarked.
The theme for the 2025 Canadian Walk for Veterans is “Honouring the Past; Supporting the Journey,” reflecting the commitment to recognize the service of all generations of veterans. This event not only raises funds but also fosters community understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by the armed forces.
