The Sardis Falcons and G.W. Graham Grizzlies are set to clash on October 24, 2024, at Exhibition Field for the inaugural Eastern Valley Bowl. This matchup marks a significant moment in Chilliwack’s sports history, as the two high school teams compete for the first time since their playoff meeting in 2021, which ended in an 18-0 victory for the Grizzlies in front of a packed crowd.

As excitement builds, both teams are eager to showcase their skills. The Falcons have recently moved up to AAA, allowing for a more competitive regular season. “We anticipate the same electric atmosphere for the game on October 24,” said Falcons head coach Sukh Parmar. “It creates a friendly rivalry between the two schools, and everyone is looking forward to it.” Parmar credited the Chilliwack Giants Community Football program for nurturing local talent that has contributed to the success of both high school teams.

The importance of community football in fostering local talent cannot be overstated. “This rivalry game wouldn’t take place without community football,” Parmar added, noting that many players who excelled in the Giants program now represent both high schools. The impact extends beyond high school as alumni from the 1970s and 1980s continue to support current players.

Grizzlies head coach Mike Hayes echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the strength of Chilliwack’s football community. “The collaboration between programs to create a special event for players, parents, and fans shows that the future is bright for youth football in Chilliwack,” he stated. He highlighted the deep connections formed among the players through the Giants program, saying, “The bonds they have created are unbreakable.”

The Eastern Valley Bowl is not just a showcase of athleticism; it also serves a charitable purpose. Admission to the game is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring cash or non-perishable food items for the Chilliwack Salvation Army food bank. To facilitate this effort, Purolator Canada will help transport the collected donations, with promotional support from the BC Lions. “We anticipate a big crowd and encourage everyone to come out and watch the game,” said Parmar, highlighting the event’s community spirit.

As the Sardis Falcons prepare for their upcoming games, including a matchup against Notre Dame on October 17, they hold a current record of one win and two losses. The anticipation builds not only for the Eastern Valley Bowl but also for the establishment of a third high school football program at Chilliwack Secondary next school year, further solidifying the region’s commitment to youth football.

Both coaches hope that the Eastern Valley Bowl will become an annual event that attracts significant community support and fosters a lasting love for the game. “When we started the Sardis football program in 2018, our goal was to promote the sport and encourage participation,” said Parmar. “We believe this event will contribute to a greater football culture in the city.” As the date approaches, players and fans alike are gearing up for what promises to be a memorable celebration of high school football in Chilliwack.
