Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Educator Susan Hathaway

The community is mourning the loss of Susan Margaret Hathaway, a dedicated educator and beloved family member, who passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 51. Known for her passion for teaching, Susan inspired countless students during her tenure at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Aron Hathaway, and their cherished children, Owen and Rebecca. She is also mourned by her mother, Wanda Muncaster, brother Andrew Muncaster, and many other family members from the Muncaster, Hathaway, Buchanan, and Davis families.
A Passion for Education and the Arts
As a teacher of Drama and English, Susan was known for her ability to engage students with literature and the arts. She brought to life powerful narratives such as To Kill a Mockingbird, fostering a love for learning among her students. In addition to her classroom work, she directed and produced award-winning plays through the school’s theatre program, enabling students to explore their creativity and talents.
Outside of her professional life, Susan found joy in nature and family gatherings. She was happiest at her cottage, where she enjoyed the company of loved ones, her dog Murphy (also affectionately known as Tucker), and a book in hand. For Susan, weekends spent relaxing on the deck while listening to music were treasured moments.
Her children, Owen and Rebecca, were a source of immense pride for Susan. Owen excelled at university, participating in various sports, while Rebecca shone on the volleyball court and in her studies. Their achievements brought her great joy and fulfillment.
Visitation and Funeral Arrangements
A visitation to celebrate Susan’s life will take place at Barnes Funeral Home located at 5295 Thickson Rd N, Whitby, ON, on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 17:00 and 18:00 to 20:00. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, October 27, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at Brooklin United Church, located at 19 Cassels Rd E, Whitby, ON.

Susan Hathaway’s warmth, generosity, and dedication to her students and family will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and compassion that will continue to impact the lives of many.
