Family Reunites with Missing Cat Just in Time for Christmas
A family in Mount Pearl is celebrating a heartwarming reunion this holiday season after their beloved cat, Micky, was found two months after going missing. On October 22, Micky, an almost one-year-old feline, escaped during a rainstorm, prompting his owner, Kayla Gavin, to launch an extensive search in their neighborhood.
Gavin recounted her efforts to locate Micky, stating, “We looked everywhere for Micky. We did all the things that you do. You spread the litter. You leave a sock on the trail.” Despite her persistent search, hope faded over time. “We had pretty much given up hope. It was devastating, and we had kind of sort of given into the fact that he’s met his destiny, whatever that is,” she added.
Exactly two months after Micky’s disappearance, Gavin’s daughter received an unexpected call from the St. John’s SPCA regarding a cat that matched Micky’s description. “I get there. I’m so excited. It’s Micky. We got him, and he’s home for Christmas,” Gavin shared with excitement. She noted that Micky appeared well-fed and cared for, joking, “He is a little fatter than when he left, so he was eating good.”
Micky’s Journey to Reunion
After escaping from their home, Micky made his way to Paddy’s Pond, where he was taken in by a kind individual living in a cabin. Gavin expressed her gratitude towards this person, who sent her pictures of Micky during his time away. “I’m like, ‘OK, so Micky went on vacation is what I’m seeing,’” she remarked, amused by the situation.
The reunion has prompted Gavin to advocate for responsible pet ownership, particularly the importance of microchipping pets. She urges anyone who finds a lost animal to take them to a shelter for scanning. “Please bring them to a shelter so that they can get scanned for a microchip because somebody could be really missing them,” she emphasized.
Now reunited, Micky is enjoying his time at home, particularly relishing his new cat tower. In a humorous twist, Gavin is also working to keep him away from her Christmas tree, ensuring that the holiday season remains joyful and safe for everyone.
This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the importance of pet identification and the power of community in reuniting lost animals with their families.
