First Responders Gear Up for Parkinson’s Charity Boxing Gala
First responders in Surrey will return to the boxing ring to raise awareness and funds for a program dedicated to supporting individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The third annual **Guns and Hoses** gala is set for **November 7, 2023**, at the **Aria Banquet & Convention Centre**. Organizer **Frankie LaSasso** describes the event as a formal gathering with a distinct sporting flair: “Picture a wedding with a boxing ring in the middle,” he shared on September 18.
The charity boxing tournament features local police officers and firefighters competing in sanctioned matches, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Last year’s event raised approximately **$75,000** for a wellness centre launched by the **Punch Out Parkinson’s** charity in **Langley**. Although the wellness centre was closed two months ago due to operational challenges, the focus on growing the program remains strong.
With the wellness centre now off the table, LaSasso explained that fundraising efforts can be directed toward initiatives with a more significant community impact. “This money will go into having more coaches, more classes… and is helping more people in the community,” he stated. The charity’s programs are offered at LaSasso’s **Box2Fit** locations in **White Rock** and **Langley**.
Over the past two months, the classes—provided at no cost for those living with Parkinson’s—have increased to six per week in White Rock and five in Langley, benefiting around **70 families**. These classes emphasize balance, strength, and conditioning, which are critical to mitigating the effects of Parkinson’s, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. LaSasso, certified through the **Rock Steady** program in Indianapolis, has been teaching this program for nearly a decade, initially launching it in South Surrey.
The arrival of the program in White Rock was made possible earlier this year by a **Healthy Community Grant** from the **Peace Arch Hospital Foundation**. LaSasso is currently seeking sponsors, attendees, and volunteers for the upcoming gala. “We’re asking for people to really come out and be hands-on,” he urged. “We’re a charity really touching families here in the community, we’d love other people to be part of what we’re doing.”
Among the participants is **Maxwell Peacock**, a firefighter from **North Vancouver** and a member of the **Canadian Armed Forces**. He expressed a personal connection to the cause, stating, “Two of my best friends’ dads were diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and one – who was like a father to me – passed away in 2011.” Peacock emphasized, “This fight is for them, and for every family affected by this disease.”
For those interested in attending the gala or purchasing tickets, further information can be found at **punchoutparkinsons.ca**. The event promises to be a memorable night, combining the spirit of competition with a commitment to community support.
