Geneva Launches “You Matter” Campaign to Combat Suicide
The City of Geneva has unveiled its second annual “You Matter” campaign this September, aiming to raise awareness about suicide prevention. In collaboration with the Geneva Community Unit School District 304, the Geneva Park District, and the Geneva Public Library District, the initiative seeks to highlight the impact and prevalence of suicide in the community while promoting effective prevention strategies.
Christine Lazaris, Director of the Geneva Public Library, emphasized the significance of collaboration in the campaign, stating, “This campaign shows what is possible when organizations unite for a common purpose. Together, we are sending a clear message that support is here and that every person in our community truly matters.”
Key Initiatives and Support Services
The campaign features a variety of initiatives designed to support mental health and provide resources to the community. The Geneva Police Department has established a partnership with the Association for Individual Development (AID) since 2020, which includes the provision of an on-site social worker. Residents can make appointments with AID social worker Allison Bader by calling 630-966-9393 or emailing [email protected]. Furthermore, the department’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is trained to assist residents facing mental health challenges, with 94% of officers having completed CIT training.
The City’s Mental Health Board also plays a pivotal role in community support through funding, advocacy, and education. In 2024, the board awarded $200,000 in grants to 17 organizations serving Geneva residents, with applications for the 2025 funding cycle set to open in October.
Community Engagement and Events
Geneva High School has contributed to the campaign through its Peer Leadership Program and the Students Against Destructive Decisions group, which recently organized a “Chalk Talk” event in recognition of Suicide Awareness Day. Students decorated sidewalks with messages of support, fostering an environment of encouragement and awareness.
The Geneva Park District is actively participating by posting information and resources related to the You Matter campaign in park kiosks throughout September. Additionally, the Geneva Public Library District is hosting a workshop titled “Hope and Resilience: Suicide Prevention Training” on September 14. Mental health resources will also be made available online at www.gpld.org and within the library building.
Residents can engage with the community by participating in the “Messages of Hope” display located in the library lobby. This initiative allows visitors to share uplifting messages and take one home for personal encouragement.
For immediate assistance, individuals are encouraged to contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. The City of Geneva reaffirms that every resident matters and that support is readily available within the community.
