Glenbow Museum to Reopen as JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture

The Glenbow Museum in Calgary is preparing for its highly anticipated reopening later this year. After closing in 2021 for a significant renovation, the museum aims to unveil a transformed space that promises to enhance visitor experience and accessibility. Originally set to reopen in mid-2024, the timeline has been adjusted, and the new opening date is now confirmed for this year.

The revitalized Glenbow Museum will showcase an impressive 44 exhibitions, displays, and installations across eight floors, covering a total area of 325,000 square feet. Home to over 250,000 works of art, it boasts one of the largest public art collections in Western Canada. The renovated facility, located at the corner of 1st Street SE and Stephen Avenue, will be officially named the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture. This rebranding is in recognition of a generous $35 million donation from the Shaw Family Foundation.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of free general admission, making the Glenbow Museum the first major museum in Canada to offer this initiative. Additionally, a spacious 13,000 sq. ft. rooftop patio with a pavilion is set to provide year-round outdoor enjoyment.

For the first time, floors five, six, and seven, previously utilized as storage, will be opened to the public. These areas will now include expansive windows, allowing visitors to view more collections than ever before. The eighth floor will house a conservation lab, offering insights into how conservators maintain and preserve the artworks.
