Go North Music Festival Celebrated with Arts Award Recognition

The Go North Music Festival has been honored with the Arts Award at the SooToday Community Builders Awards, marking a significant milestone in its journey since its inception in 2017. This annual festival has evolved from a small summer concert into a vital cultural event for St. Joseph Island and the broader Algoma region.
Initially birthed from the Township of St. Joseph’s “Just Passing Through” concert series, the festival has steadily established itself as a premier summer music venue. Over the years, it has attracted renowned Canadian artists such as The Trews and Big Sugar, while also showcasing emerging talents from across the country. Beyond the music, the festival offers families a vibrant gathering space, complete with a designated kids’ area, diverse food options from local vendors, and artisans displaying handcrafted goods that celebrate the region’s creativity.
Community-Centric and Volunteer-Driven
What sets the Go North Music Festival apart is its community-driven approach, relying entirely on volunteers to bring the event to life. The festival emphasizes accessibility and aims to create shared experiences that bring together people of all ages. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the festival made a triumphant return, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to the community.
“This is wonderful. We’re very honoured to be considered one of Sault Ste. Marie’s community builders,” stated Sheri Gladu, community projects coordinator for the Township of St. Joseph and a representative for the festival. She expressed pride in witnessing the festival’s growth, stating, “Seeing the crowd build year after year and seeing families come out and enjoy themselves is always such a proud moment for us.”
Gladu highlighted the importance of community cohesion, noting, “There are lots of different ways to do that, but music is one of the most wonderful ways for people to join together and celebrate what it is to be part of Northern Ontario.”
A Tradition of Celebration and Growth
From its humble beginnings, the Go North Music Festival has transformed into a celebration of both local and national talent, contributing significantly to tourism and community unity. What began as a simple event has blossomed into a cherished tradition and a source of pride for the region, recognized for its leadership in the arts.
“We are very appreciative of this award and we look forward to presenting even bigger and better Go North Music Festivals in the years to come,” Gladu added, reflecting the festival’s commitment to continuous growth and enhancement.
The Arts Award, proudly sponsored by Algoma Office Equipment, recognizes individuals or groups that have made significant contributions to the artistic community, enhancing its growth and vibrancy. The Go North Music Festival stands as a testament to the power of music and community spirit, celebrating the artistry that enriches the lives of many.
