Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Greater Vernon Cultural Centre
The construction of the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre officially commenced today, August 26, 2023. A significant gathering took place outside the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives, where community members, local politicians, and advocates celebrated the groundbreaking of this long-anticipated cultural asset.
Dauna Kennedy, the executive director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “What a perfect day to be here to gather together to break ground on the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre. The Vernon Public Art Gallery has long been advocating for this dream since as far back as 1986.” This new facility aims to unite two vital community institutions—the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum—within a single, dynamic location.
A diverse group of attendees, including representatives from the Okanagan Indian Band, local construction workers, and community supporters, participated in the ceremony. Each individual joined in turning soil as a symbol of the project’s significance.
During the event, the Jaeger family announced a donation of $50,000, contributing to the total fundraising amount of $1,724,210. The Together 4 Culture Fundraising campaign has set an ambitious goal of raising $5.3 million for the construction of the centre.
Community leaders delivered speeches that underscored the importance of arts and culture in the Greater Vernon area. The $46 million facility is expected to be developed in phases, with construction projected to continue until spring 2028.
Work on the site will take place Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:30, with some weekend operations as needed. The community eagerly anticipates the positive impact the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre will have on regional culture and arts accessibility.
