Grundy Area PADS Invites Community Feedback for Winter Shelter

Grundy Area PADS is calling for community input regarding plans for a winter shelter to assist those in need in Morris, Illinois. The organization has launched a survey on its website, https://www.grundypads.org, to gather opinions and suggestions from local residents. This initiative highlights the urgency of addressing homelessness during the colder months.

Phil Wardlow, a board member of Grundy Area PADS, emphasized the importance of community feedback. “Your messages that are coming in are powerful,” he stated. The organization aims to create a winter shelter that serves the existing population in Grundy County, providing a safe space for those vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

Meghan Kelly, an employee at PADS, is responsible for organizing responses to the survey. She ensures that all identifying information is removed before sharing the results with the team. “Most responses so far express strong support for a winter shelter,” Wardlow noted. Many community members have voiced their belief that “no one should have to sleep in the cold.”

The need for a shelter has become increasingly apparent, particularly during severe weather events. Kelly regularly observes individuals in Morris without a safe place to stay. Along with support for the shelter, she has also received feedback expressing concerns about safety and the potential for attracting individuals from surrounding areas.

Wardlow addressed these concerns directly. “Our winter shelter is designed to serve Grundy County residents who are already here, not to attract an influx from counties surrounding Grundy County.” He pointed out that a structured shelter can help mitigate the visibility of homelessness by providing a designated place for individuals to go, rather than sleeping in parks or on the streets.

The organization aims to create a supportive environment, staffed by trained professionals who can ensure safety while meeting the needs of the community. Wardlow also expressed gratitude for critical feedback, as it allows the organization to better understand the community’s diverse perspectives.
