Halton Learning Foundation Launches Fundraiser to Support Students

The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) has initiated a fundraising campaign aimed at providing essential school supplies for students in need. The organization responded to a staggering 3,600 requests for basic educational resources during the 2024-25 school year, marking a 20 percent increase from the previous year. This rise highlights the urgent need for community support to ensure that students can return to school equipped with the tools necessary for success.
According to HLF Chief Executive Officer Marc Clare, confidence is a critical component of student achievement. “We want every student to begin the school year with confidence and the tools they need to thrive,” Clare stated. “But for at least one in ten families in our community, the basic costs of returning to school—like backpacks, lunch, or proper shoes—are out of reach. When students have what they need, they feel seen, supported, and ready to succeed.”
Community Invited to Contribute
In response to the increasing demand, HLF is appealing to the Halton community to contribute to the fundraiser through GoBack2School.ca. Donations will be directed towards providing gift cards to families, allowing them to purchase items that meet their children’s specific needs rather than offering pre-packed supplies.
This approach not only empowers families by giving them the choice to select what is necessary for their children but also ensures that the support aligns with individual circumstances. HLF emphasizes the importance of community involvement in meeting these needs.
HLF’s initiative is further supported by its mascot and back-to-school ambassador, Carrie the Backpack. Carrie is encouraging local businesses to participate in Carrie the Backpack Day on September 19, 2024. Businesses can engage by contributing to the fundraiser or hosting events that promote awareness of the campaign.
How to Get Involved
Residents and local businesses interested in supporting the Halton Learning Foundation can find more information and make donations at haltonlearningfoundation.ca/carriethebackpackday/. Each contribution will play a vital role in ensuring that students in the Halton District School Board have access to essential supplies, fostering an environment where they can thrive academically.
As the school year approaches, the HLF’s efforts highlight the importance of community support in addressing educational disparities. By working together, Halton residents can help create a positive and supportive learning experience for all students.
