Heather McDonald Leads United Way Greater Toronto into 10-Year Vision

In May 2023, Heather McDonald took on the role of president and CEO of United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT). This transition comes at a pivotal time as the organization embarks on an ambitious 10-year strategy aimed at expanding essential services and raising $1.5 billion. The plan focuses on securing permanent spaces for community organizations and developing strategies to combat poverty and inequality in the Greater Toronto Area.

McDonald brings over 25 years of experience in the social and human services sector. Prior to joining UWGT, she served as CEO of LOFT Community Services, one of Ontario’s largest providers of supportive housing and mental health services. Under her leadership, LOFT expanded its housing portfolio and diversified funding sources. Now, she oversees a network of more than 300 agencies supported by UWGT.

McDonald’s Vision and Experience in Social Services

In a recent conversation, McDonald shared insights about her journey into social services and her aspirations for UWGT. She began her career with a master’s degree in social work, committed to helping individuals and communities improve their circumstances. “I started out as a social worker but was always drawn to leadership roles,” she noted. This path led her to a United Way-funded organization that provided essential housing and outreach services.

Recognizing the importance of marrying community needs with effective leadership, McDonald returned to school to study business at the Rotman School of Management. This education equipped her with the necessary skills to engage corporate and philanthropic partners effectively.

Her decision to lead UWGT stemmed from a long-standing admiration for the organization. “I was drawn to the collaborative nature of UWGT,” McDonald explained. “They are focused on achieving significant outcomes for our communities and are remarkable change-makers.”

Addressing Challenges and Future Goals

Stepping into her new role, McDonald is acutely aware of the challenges facing the Greater Toronto Area. With rising financial stress reflected in the increasing number of individuals relying on food banks—one in ten people in the region—she emphasized the urgent need for action. “People are struggling to find affordable housing and are forced to make difficult choices between rent and food,” she stated, highlighting the critical issues UWGT aims to address.

In line with the 10-year strategic plan, McDonald outlined ambitious goals. UWGT aims to sustain its existing 10 community hubs while creating an additional 10. These hubs serve as comprehensive centers for social and healthcare services in neighborhoods that require them the most, enhancing service accessibility and quality.

Another focal point of the plan is a community real estate vision. McDonald noted that 70 percent of the community organizations supported by UWGT are at risk of losing their physical spaces. “We aim to ensure that these organizations can maintain their presence in the communities they serve,” she emphasized.

Looking ahead, McDonald expressed enthusiasm for the innovative solutions that will emerge from collaboration with partners and neighborhoods. “I believe this strategic plan is aligned with the needs of our region now and into the future,” she remarked.

As she embarks on this journey, McDonald is committed to fostering civic engagement and addressing the pressing needs of the Greater Toronto Area. “The United Way Greater Toronto is the radical hope that our region needs,” she stated. “In a world that feels increasingly divided, we must find paths forward.”
