In a related community highlight, on October 18, 1975, local resident Gino Guzzo caught a remarkable 30-pound coho salmon in the St. Mary’s River Rapids. Guzzo utilized a 15-pound test line paired with a lure, showcasing not only his fishing skills but also the rich natural resources of the area.
Meanwhile, the Westminster Presbyterian Church is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary on October 19. The current sanctuary, constructed in 1926, has served as a cornerstone for the community, and this milestone will be marked with various events.
In political news, Bud Wildman, the first New Democratic Party representative from Algoma at Queen’s Park, is actively visiting communities within his extensive 24,000-square-mile riding. His outreach efforts aim to connect with constituents and address local issues.
Arts and Cultural Developments
The arts scene in Sault Ste. Marie is also vibrant, with Marion Wilson directing the upcoming production of Come Blow Your Horn. This Neil Simon comedy will kick off the season for the Sault Theatre Workshop, with Brendan Cullen producing. The cast includes local talents such as Bud Godson, Glenn Hornblower, Keith Knight, Jacquie Huckson, Denise Maluorno, Carole Farley, and Janet Short.
On a historical note, a special meeting of the Tarentorus council took place on October 17, 1950, concerning annexation issues. The council rejected the latest proposal from city officials and decided to escalate the matter to the Municipal Board for resolution.
Looking back further, on October 18, 1915, a detachment of 50 soldiers left Sault Ste. Marie for overseas service. They were supported by Col. Penhorwood, who presented each soldier with $5, along with gifts of tobacco and other provisions from the ladies of the British Patriotic League, who provided lunches for their journey.
As local events and recognitions unfold, the community of Sault Ste. Marie continues to showcase its commitment to service, culture, and history.
