An 18-year-old graduate from Kinngait has been awarded the $500 Kananginak Pootoogook Scholarship by the West Baffin Cooperative for her impressive academic achievements and contributions to her community. Asiina Saila, who attended both Sam Pudlat Elementary and Peter Pitseolak Secondary School, is now employed in finance at the Nunavut Housing Corporation office in Iqaluit.

Saila’s scholarship recognizes not only her academic excellence but also her significant role at the West Baffin Cooperative, where she worked as a cashier and held a managerial position within the retail store. In addition, she served as the general operations administrator, showcasing her diverse skill set. This summer, Saila participated in the Northern Youth Abroad Program in Ottawa, where she developed professional skills through various assignments and seminars.

Community Impact and Support

William Huffman, the executive administrator at West Baffin Cooperative, emphasized the importance of supporting the emerging generation of professionals. He stated, “Any opportunity to encourage and support our emerging generation of future professionals and community leaders is extremely important.” The scholarship awarded to Saila can be used at her discretion, allowing her to pursue any educational or training path she chooses.

The West Baffin Cooperative, an arts studio and employment training facility, is a significant employer in the Kinngait community. It provides jobs for 65 staff across its various operations, including a retail store, small-engine repair garage, fuel delivery services, and rental properties. Huffman noted that the cooperative is often the first place of employment for many local youth, highlighting its role in fostering essential skills within the community.

“Whether it’s in the studio or for engine mechanics, these are essential skills that not only benefit the employee but are critical to prosperity in the community,” Huffman added.

A Legacy of Achievement

The Kananginak Pootoogook Scholarship is named after the co-founder of the West Baffin Cooperative and an internationally renowned artist. Since its inception in 2011, the scholarship has been awarded to nine previous recipients, all of whom have graduated from Peter Pitseolak Secondary School. This consistent support highlights the cooperative’s commitment to fostering local talent and empowering youth through education.

Asiina Saila’s achievements and the support she has received from the West Baffin Cooperative exemplify the positive impact of local organizations in nurturing the next generation of leaders in Kinngait.
