La Ronge Students Honored with Inaugural Wayne Buckle Bursary
The first recipients of the Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary are La Ronge Churchill Community High School students, Kristjana Bergsveinson and Xyrene Cheng. Each student will benefit from a funding amount of $7,500 aimed at supporting their pursuit of post-secondary education. This bursary, established to honor the late Wayne Buckle, is funded by the Campling Family Foundation and aims to assist one or two northern students from La Ronge each year.
Sam Campling, representing the foundation, expressed that the students were chosen for their exceptional commitment to both their education and community involvement. “These students showed remarkable grades and great community participation,” he noted in an email to larongeNOW. The bursary reflects Buckle’s dedication to education and his deep roots in the La Ronge community, where he was widely respected.
Buckle, a lawyer with experience in various legal sectors including private practice and Legal Aid, was an alumnus of the University of Saskatchewan. He completed his law practicum in Prince Albert and was known for his advocacy for education. Buckle cherished his time spent with family and friends, particularly at Wadin Bay, which he considered his home.
Applications for the Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary will reopen in late spring 2026, providing another opportunity for qualifying students to receive financial assistance. This initiative not only honors Buckle’s legacy but also aims to inspire future generations of students in the La Ronge area.
