Langley Named Canada’s Cat Lover Capital Ahead of Adoption Week
Metro Vancouver has officially earned the title of Canada’s cat lover capital, with Langley leading the way in feline adoptions and cat-related purchases. This recognition comes from a recent report by PetSmart Charities of Canada, which highlighted the top ten cities for cat enthusiasts ahead of the upcoming National Adoption Week.
Langley topped the list by demonstrating a significant commitment to cat adoption, with residents not only welcoming more cats into their homes but also spending heavily on cat toys, treats, and other pampering products. According to PetSmart Charities of Canada, the findings reflect a broader trend where cat adoptions are outpacing those of dogs, indicating a shift in pet ownership preferences.
Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, expressed her enthusiasm about the results. “We’ve been following this trend as cat adoptions outpace dog adoptions – and it’s fair to say cats are having a moment,” she stated in a press release. “This index shows us that cat parenting is more universal than you might think, and those old stereotypes no longer apply.”
The index compiled by PetSmart Charities of Canada used a formula that factored in both cat adoptions and sales of cat-related products, with each category contributing equally to the final ranking. Additionally, results were adjusted based on the number of PetSmart store locations in each city, ensuring a fair comparison across the board.
Langley’s strong showing was complemented by two other British Columbia cities, with Nanaimo securing fifth place and Victoria landing in tenth. The majority of the remaining cities featured in the index were located in Ontario, showcasing a regional variance in cat ownership trends.
National Adoption Week is scheduled to take place from July 21 to July 27, 2024. During this week, Metro Vancouver residents are encouraged to visit local PetSmart stores, where they can meet adoptable pets from various animal welfare organizations. This initiative not only promotes responsible pet ownership but also aims to enhance the lives of both cats and their new families.
The popularity of cats as companions can be attributed to their adaptability to smaller living spaces and their independent nature, making them ideal pets for many urban residents. As society continues to embrace the joy of cat companionship, cities like Langley are setting a precedent for pet-friendly communities across Canada.
