Langley Recovery Centre Unveils Modern Housing Facility for Residents

A new chapter has emerged for the Wagner Hills treatment facility in Langley, British Columbia, with the opening of the Oakhouse Men’s Facility on September 5, 2023. This modern housing unit replaces outdated accommodations and aims to provide a supportive environment for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. The facility can house up to 50 men simultaneously, marking a significant upgrade from its early days when residents were offered basic shelter in tents.
Wes Wagner, who founded the faith-based centre in 1981 alongside Helmut Boehm, reflected on the evolution of the centre. “The first accommodation for people was a tent,” Boehm noted during the official opening ceremony, highlighting the drastic improvements made over the decades.
The new facility features a range of amenities designed to enhance the living experience for residents. A grand piano greets visitors in the foyer, while artwork adorns the walls, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The facility also boasts a state-of-the-art gym, which replaces a previous workout space that housed rusted equipment in a repurposed greenhouse.
Executive director Jason Roberts, a former resident himself, expressed enthusiasm about the new facility. “The intent of the new building is to give people a home, not just a place to live,” he said. Roberts emphasized the importance of creating a high-quality environment that fosters self-worth among residents. “This sort of building says ‘You’re worth it,’” he added, pointing out that many individuals arrive at the centre feeling devalued.
Beyond the comfortable living quarters, the Oakhouse Men’s Facility includes a doctor’s office, allowing medical professionals to consult with clients on-site. Shared spaces on the second and third floors provide opportunities for residents to engage in conversation, read, or play cards, facilitating community building during recovery.
Residents began moving into the new facility on June 27, 2023, and much of the housing is now fully occupied. Plans for future expansion are underway, with potential projects including a woodworking facility that will further integrate residents into the working farm environment of the centre.
This significant investment in infrastructure not only represents a transformative change for the Wagner Hills treatment facility but also underscores a commitment to the welfare and rehabilitation of its residents, providing them with a sense of dignity and a supportive community. The dedication to creating a nurturing environment reflects the belief that individuals in recovery deserve quality care and a place they can truly call home.
