Langley Secondary’s Poitras Wins National Award for Stunning Interception

A remarkable one-handed interception by linebacker Jackson Poitras from Langley Secondary School (LSS) has garnered national attention and resulted in a significant boost for his school’s football program. Poitras’ impressive play, executed during a BC Secondary School Football Association AAA Varsity game on September 27, 2023, earned him the Week 5 NFL Canada Way to Play Award, which includes a $3,000 equipment grant for LSS.

Reflecting on the moment, the 17-year-old Poitras expressed his astonishment at the recognition. “I kind of get the ball and I hit the ground and I almost paused for a second,” he told the Langley Advance Times. “It’s pretty cool. I couldn’t even believe it.”

Poitras’ stunning catch took place during a match against East Vancouver’s Notre Dame Secondary Jugglers, where he successfully intercepted a pass intended for the end zone. Joe MacLeod, head coach of the LSS Thunderbirds, nominated Poitras for the award and praised the play as “a heck of a football play.” He noted, “The quarterback threw a really nice ball down there, but Jackson managed to kind of elevate up, get his hand in there.”

Not only did the interception thwart a potential touchdown, it also set up a favorable field position for the Thunderbirds, showcasing Poitras’ skill and athleticism. MacLeod emphasized the importance of the equipment grant, stating, “We just launched a junior varsity program this year, and that lets us complement our senior team that Jackson’s on.” The funding will be allocated towards purchasing helmets for the expanded program.

Poitras, a standout player who has been selected as a conference all-star for AAA East, shared how football has transformed his life. After experiencing personal challenges, including the loss of his father, he found solace and purpose in the sport. “I was watching the Langley high school team play,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Mom, let me play football. I really want to play football.’ I have something to focus on now. I have something to work towards and something to look forward to.”

His aspirations extend beyond high school football, as Poitras aims to attend university to pursue both a football career and a degree in kinesiology. He has already begun to attract attention from universities interested in his talent.

The Way to Play award, managed by Football Canada, is designed to support Canadian high school and CEGEP tackle football programs while promoting proper playing techniques. Players or their supporters are encouraged to submit videos demonstrating skills such as tackling, blocking, and footwork. This initiative not only highlights individual talent but also aims to enhance the overall quality of football at the grassroots level.

With the substantial grant and Poitras’ exceptional performance, Langley Secondary School is poised to further develop its football program. As the team continues to grow, Poitras remains a shining example of how dedication and talent can lead to recognition and opportunity in sports.
