A resident of Langley, British Columbia, has received the prestigious **Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers**, Canada’s highest honour for volunteer service. This award recognises individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to their communities through unpaid efforts.

During a ceremony attended by family and friends, **Nathan Pachal**, Mayor of Langley City, presented the medal on behalf of the **Governor General of Canada**. Cheung expressed appreciation for the honour, stating, “I was really quite surprised, honoured and humbled to receive this prestigious award.” He acknowledged the many dedicated individuals he has worked alongside and highlighted their collective contributions.

Two Decades of Commitment to Community

Cheung has devoted over **twenty years** to volunteer work, contributing hundreds of hours to various organisations, including **S.U.C.C.E.S.S.**, the **BC Games Society**, and the **BC Summer Swimming Association**. His efforts have focused on newcomer settlement, affordable housing, seniors’ care, and youth sports, significantly strengthening community bonds across the province.

From **2012 to 2018**, Cheung served as a director with S.U.C.C.E.S.S., where he helped advance programs for newcomers and seniors in British Columbia, Toronto, and overseas offices in Asia. Since **2022**, he has held the position of finance chair for the BC Games Society, guiding strategic and financial planning for both the **BC Winter Games** and **Summer Games**.

In his previous role as vice-president of the BC Summer Swimming Association, Cheung was instrumental in developing a strategic plan, updating the rule book for aquatic disciplines, and managing member discipline. He also officiates at provincial and national swimming events and volunteers in various sports such as athletics, gymnastics, canoe and kayak, and volleyball competitions.

In addition to his sports-related contributions, Cheung has raised service dogs for the **Pacific Assistance Dogs Society**, and volunteered for **Operation Red Nose**, which provides safe rides for community members during the holiday season.

A Vision for Youth in Sports

Cheung envisions a future where all children have access to the benefits of organized sports, despite the often high costs associated with participation. He plans to collaborate with public and private organisations to create a support network and financial system to assist underprivileged children in accessing sports opportunities.

He remarked, “The benefits of sport for young people can be tremendous. Yet, we know there is a very high cost to organized sport, and there are many children who don’t have the opportunity or resources to participate.” Cheung’s strategy includes working with sports clubs to secure funding and matching volunteers with children to facilitate their participation in practices and competitions.

He believes that these efforts will provide invaluable experiences, teaching children values such as dedication, teamwork, and perseverance. “These positive experiences will encourage them to make good decisions for their futures,” he noted.

Earlier this year, Cheung also received the **King Charles III Coronation Medal** for his extensive community service and volunteerism.

Cheung encourages others to engage in volunteerism, despite the challenges of busy lives. “Volunteerism is the backbone of a thriving and compassionate community,” he stated. “So just jump in and volunteer as much as you can, and it will be extremely rewarding.” His commitment to service continues to inspire those around him, illustrating the profound impact of volunteer contributions in building stronger communities.
