Lions Dominate Stampeders 52-23; Rourke Sets Canadian Passing Record

The B.C. Lions delivered an impressive performance on September 29, 2023, defeating the Calgary Stampeders 52-23 in a Canadian Football League (CFL) matchup. Quarterback Nathan Rourke not only led his team to victory but also made history by surpassing Russ Jackson‘s long-standing record for most passing yards by a Canadian in a single season. Rourke’s stellar game included three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, bringing his season total to 3,935 yards.
In front of an announced crowd of 23,554 at McMahon Stadium, the Lions showcased their formidable offense. Rourke completed 20 of 24 pass attempts for 331 yards, demonstrating precision and control. His performance highlighted the Lions’ ability to score, marking their seventh consecutive game with over 30 points.
Calgary’s offense, led by starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., struggled throughout the game. Adams completed 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards before leaving with an injury during the third quarter. Adams’ backup, P.J. Walker, also faced challenges, finishing with 64 yards and a touchdown after being thrust into action.
The game began with a strong offensive drive from the Lions, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by Rourke. This set the tone for the contest, as B.C. quickly established a commanding lead. Following a turnover by Calgary, Jeremiah Masoli extended the lead with a one-yard plunge, putting the Lions up 14-0.
Calgary’s struggles continued as they recorded only a single first down in the first quarter. The Lions took advantage of this, scoring again with a remarkable 26-yard run by Rourke after a spectacular 53-yard catch by Stanley Berryhill. The Stampeders finally got on the board in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal from Rene Paredes.
Despite the Stampeders’ attempts to rally, the Lions maintained their momentum. Rourke connected with Justin McInnis for a 35-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 28-3 just before halftime. Calgary managed to add two more field goals in the game, but it was not enough to mount a comeback.
As the third quarter progressed, Adams was removed from the game after sustaining an injury. This prompted a switch to Vaughn, who was able to score Calgary’s first touchdown, but the Lions quickly responded with another touchdown from Rourke and a 70-yard rushing touchdown by Zander Horvath.
The Lions’ performance solidifies their status as one of the top teams in the league, showcasing an explosive offense capable of overwhelming defenses. Looking ahead, the Lions will face the Toronto Argonauts, while the Stampeders will seek redemption against the Montreal Alouettes next Friday. The outcome of this game reflects a pivotal moment in the CFL season, with Rourke’s record-setting performance likely to be remembered as a highlight of his career.
