Local Author Unveils New Book on Former B.C. Premier John Hart

The Victoria Historical Society will kick off its 2025 to 2026 Speaker Series with a presentation by local author Patricia Roy on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The event will be held at James Bay New Horizons located on Menzies Street, where Roy will discuss her latest book, John Hart: A Businessman in British Columbia Politics, which delves into the life of former British Columbia Premier John Hart.
In a recent announcement, the society highlighted Roy’s exploration of Hart, an Irish immigrant who played a significant role in the province’s political landscape during the first half of the 20th century. The book draws on various sources, including government documents, letters from politicians, and contemporary newspaper articles, to shed light on Hart’s contributions as both finance minister and premier.
“Diplomacy works better than bluster, as John Hart knew well,” Roy stated in a press release. “His talent for compromise and his famously winning smile were instrumental in navigating the complexities of B.C. politics.”
The evening will commence with doors opening at 19:15, followed by Roy’s talk starting at 19:30. Attendees can expect an engaging discussion that not only recounts Hart’s political achievements but also reflects on the broader historical context of his time.
This event marks a significant opportunity for residents and history enthusiasts to gain insights into the legacy of a pivotal figure in British Columbia’s political history. The Victoria Historical Society encourages community members to attend and participate in the dialogue surrounding Hart’s impact and the lessons his life holds for contemporary politics.
The society has organized a series of events aiming to foster a deeper understanding of local history, and this presentation is expected to be a highlight of the season. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating for what promises to be an enlightening evening.
