Local Quilting Group Seeks Support to Warm Children’s Hearts
A dedicated group of volunteers in Sault Ste. Marie is reaching out for support to continue its mission of providing comfort to local children in need through handmade quilts. The Sault Ste. Marie chapter of Quilts for Kids, which is the only one of its kind in Canada, has been operating for over a decade. Founded by Vicki Young and three friends in 2012, the group was inspired by a similar organization based in the United States. After visiting the charity’s headquarters in Philadelphia, they established Canada’s first chapter.
“Our mission is to provide comfort to children who are in need, whether it’s due to illness, accident, injury, or loss,” said Young, who serves as the team leader of the local chapter. “We want every child to know someone cares.” Since its inception, the group has donated over 5,000 quilts to children and families across the region.
These quilts have reached numerous children through partnerships with organizations such as the Children’s Aid Society, Algoma Family Services, and the Sault Area Hospital’s neonatal unit. First responders also utilize the quilts, keeping them in ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles to provide immediate comfort in times of crisis. Additionally, the group has assisted individual families facing hardships, such as those who have lost their homes or have a seriously ill child.
Call for Community Support
The local chapter currently has around 45 members, all of whom volunteer their time and skills to create these comforting quilts. However, the group relies heavily on community support to sustain its efforts. “What we need most right now is financial support,” Young emphasized. “We have to purchase backing, batting, fabric, and other supplies. Even though our members donate a lot, there are ongoing expenses we can’t cover on our own.”
Individuals wishing to contribute to this cause can do so by reaching out via email at [email protected]. Every donation, regardless of size, helps the group continue its vital work in providing warmth and comfort to children in need.
Beyond seeking donations, Quilts for Kids welcomes new members to join its ranks. “It’s about more than just sewing,” Young explained. “It’s about coming together, socializing, and doing something meaningful.” New members do not need to be experts; the group has extra sewing kits and machines available for those who want to learn.
The group meets twice a month to collaborate on projects, share tips, and enjoy each other’s company. Thanks to the compassion and dedication of the Sault Ste. Marie Quilts for Kids volunteers, thousands of children have access to something tangible that reassures them they are cared for.
This initiative not only highlights the importance of community involvement but also demonstrates how a small group of passionate individuals can create a significant impact. The efforts of the Quilts for Kids chapter are a testament to the power of kindness and the difference it can make in the lives of children facing challenges.
