Carlo’s Cucina in Gimli has once again claimed the title of Manitoba’s top burger destination, as revealed during this year’s Le Burger Week. The restaurant’s signature Taste of the Interlake burger narrowly missed out on the national crown, finishing second to Patty Slaps in Montreal, which won with its acclaimed Big Jang burger. Carlo Guzzi and his wife, Marnie, have established a remarkable track record, with their burgers being recognized as the best in the country three times within the last five years.

In addition to Carlo’s Cucina, two other Manitoba establishments, PVG Street Eats and Jonesy’s, earned spots in the national top five, showcasing the province’s culinary talent.

Dine Brands Global Expands Dining Options in Winnipeg

In a notable shift for dining in Canada, Dine Brands Global is launching a unique combination restaurant model featuring both Applebee’s and IHOP under one roof in Winnipeg. This new location at the intersection of Regent and Lagimodiere is set to open on September 12, 2023, at 10:00 AM. The company aims to capitalize on operational efficiencies and increased sales potential compared to traditional standalone restaurants.

Customers who arrive early on opening day may have the chance to win a free plate of pancakes. Two additional locations are also planned for the city.

Meanwhile, 7-Eleven is gearing up for its annual Slurpee Name Your Price Day, happening on September 14, 2023. Customers can pay a minimum of 50 cents for a large Slurpee, with proceeds supporting Food Banks Canada. Last year, this initiative raised over $13,000 for local charities, with nearly 10,000 Slurpees sold in Manitoba alone.

Food Trends and Parental Concerns in Winnipeg

The beloved pumpkin spice flavor is making a significant impact in Winnipeg, which accounts for 11% of all pumpkin spice orders across Canada. Only Calgary and Edmonton surpass this figure, making Winnipeg a hotspot for this seasonal favorite.

On a different note, a recent survey of 2,000 parents revealed that a significant 30% feel judged for their children’s food choices. Parents report worrying an average of 47 times daily about their children’s well-being, encompassing concerns about diet, safety, and emotional health. Despite the pressures of time and picky eating habits, 82% of parents believe it is essential for their children to eat healthier than they do.

In a quirky food trend, Gen Z TikTok users are promoting the idea of pouring beer over ice as an ideal way to enjoy a cold beverage. A survey conducted among 2,000 Brits indicates that almost one in three individuals aged 18 to 35 have tried this method, with 20% declaring it refreshing. Critics, however, suggest chilling glasses in the freezer as a better alternative.

As these culinary trends and dining innovations unfold, the focus remains on the vibrant food culture in Winnipeg and the surrounding region, demonstrating the community’s passion for both traditional and contemporary dining experiences.
