Mark Scheifele Sets Franchise Record as Jets Defeat Predators

Mark Scheifele etched his name into the Winnipeg Jets’ history books on October 7, 2023, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in points. He achieved this milestone by scoring just 159 seconds into the game against the Nashville Predators, a perfectly executed one-timer that marked point number 813. The Jets secured a decisive 4-1 victory at the Canada Life Centre in front of 14,309 enthusiastic fans.
“This is an unbelievable pass by KC (Kyle Connor). He’s amazing,” Scheifele remarked after the game, acknowledging the teamwork that propelled him to this achievement. “I’m tremendously honoured. I wouldn’t be here without the guys, especially the guy I went ahead of. He helped me throughout my career and gave me a lot of tap-ins. I owe it all to my teammates.”
The Jets have now won four consecutive games, improving their record to 4-1-0, while the Predators fall to 2-2-2. Jets’ coach Scott Arniel expressed his pride in Scheifele’s accomplishment, stating, “It’s obviously great to see him get it at home here. He’s been such a consistent player.” He added that the goal was a “real highlight-reel play.”
In this match, Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck showcased his skills, stopping 30 of 31 shots he faced. The reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner was just 64 seconds shy of a shutout when the Predators scored due to a fortunate bounce off Jets forward Gustav Nyquist from a shot by Michael Bunting.
The game saw not only Scheifele shining but also Jonathan Toews, who recorded his first multi-point game since returning to the NHL, contributing two assists. Vlad Namestnikov and Nino Niederreiter each added a goal and an assist, while Logan Stanley scored his second goal of the season, setting a new career high.
The atmosphere in the arena was electric, with the crowd chanting “Stanley, Stanley” after his goal and earlier in the match when he engaged in a fight with Predators forward Michael McCarron. “I think it’s a first, so yeah, it felt good, I’ll take it,” Stanley joked about his fight.
Scheifele has consistently been a key player for the Jets, currently leading the team with nine points (six goals, three assists) across five games. His performance is positioning him as a strong candidate for Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics in Milan. As he celebrated his record-breaking moment, the crowd gave him a standing ovation, highlighting the strong connection between him and the fans.
“The fans here are incredible. They give us so much extra motivation,” Scheifele said, reflecting on the support he receives. In recognition of his achievement, a video message from former teammate Blake Wheeler, who previously held the record with 812 points, was displayed. Wheeler reminisced about their journey together, saying, “I remember in 2018, when I broke the record… now that time has come.”
Scheifele, who turns 33 in March 2024, is now focused on surpassing Dale Hawerchuk’s legacy, as he is just 37 goals, 79 assists, and 116 points away from breaking the all-time franchise records in those categories. The 1,000-point milestone is also within reach as he continues to excel.
The Jets’ penalty kill has been a standout aspect this season, successfully killing all four penalties against the Predators, including a challenging 5-on-3 situation. They are now 21-for-22 on the year, second only to the Buffalo Sabres. “Your best penalty killer has got to be your goalie, and he has been,” Stanley noted, praising Hellebuyck’s performance.
An unusual penalty occurred late in the second period when Josh Morrissey was called for “playing without a helmet” after a hit from Filip Forsberg caused him to lose his helmet during the play. According to NHL rules, players must immediately leave the ice in such situations.
Winnipeg capitalized on their power play opportunities, going 2-for-3 against Nashville, improving their overall power play percentage to 33.3%. Despite the final score, underlying statistics indicated that the Jets were outplayed in several aspects. Nashville generated 18 high-danger chances compared to Winnipeg’s 12, and had an expected goals tally of 5.34 versus the Jets’ 2.99.
“We still don’t think we’ve played a solid 60 minutes yet,” Scheifele acknowledged. “There are still a lot of things to fix and always things to get better at.” The Jets’ next challenge will be a road game against the Calgary Flames, where they will look to continue their winning streak.
In roster news, the Jets called up Brad Lambert from the Manitoba Moose, while Adam Lowry joined his teammates during the morning skate for the first time this season as he recovers from offseason hip surgery. The earliest potential return for Lowry remains at the end of October.
The Jets’ performance, highlighted by Scheifele’s historic milestone, sets a promising tone for the rest of the season as they aim to build on their success.
