Ottawa Mother Receives Challenge Coin for Heroic Fire Rescue
On December 3, 2024, a dramatic incident unfolded in Ottawa’s Hunt Club area when a fire engulfed the home of Stephanie McDougall. In a moment of crisis, McDougall displayed extraordinary courage, risking her own life to save her youngest son, Malcolm Ready, from the flames.
With smoke and fire blocking her path, McDougall pushed through the chaos, determined to reach her son. “I thought we were both going to die that day,” she recalled. Her instinct to protect her child led her to act without hesitation. “I had to be there for Malcolm. I couldn’t leave him there. I didn’t care about anything else,” she stated, reflecting on the harrowing experience.
In recognition of her bravery, McDougall was awarded a special challenge coin by Ottawa Fire Services during a ceremony held on Monday. Chief Paul Hutt presented the token, which symbolizes appreciation for heroism and support for first responders. “We offer a challenge coin to that member because it really shows that they’re supporting the first responders that respond each and every day to these emergencies,” Hutt explained. He highlighted how McDougall’s actions provided vital time for emergency personnel to assist in the rescue.
The award has left a profound impact on McDougall and her family. “I feel kind of blessed and honored by it to be honest,” she said, acknowledging the significance of the recognition. Her son, Cameron Ready, expressed admiration for her bravery, stating, “It’s amazing how she would do all that. I mean honestly, the bravest thing I’ve ever seen. She is a superhero.”
McDougall’s mother, Beth Conway, described her daughter as a humble person who believes that her actions were what any parent would do. “Stephanie’s a very humble, quiet person and believes that she did what anybody would do,” Conway remarked.
Looking ahead, McDougall is already contemplating where to display her challenge coin, indicating that it will hold a special place in her home. “Probably in the living room. You know, I’ll find a good spot,” she noted, emphasizing the pride she feels in receiving such an honor.
This incident not only underscores the bravery of individuals in the face of danger but also highlights the critical role that first responders play in our communities. McDougall’s story serves as a reminder of the selflessness that can emerge in moments of crisis.
