Ottawa’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Returns for 2026 Celebration
Ottawa will celebrate the return of its St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2026, marking the first occasion since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is scheduled for March 7, 2026, and will coincide with the celebrations commemorating the Bicentennial of Bytown. The announcement was made by the Irish Society of the National Capital Region, which expressed excitement about collaborating with the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police Services, and the National Capital Commission to make this event possible.
The parade will feature a new route, beginning at the Supreme Court of Canada on Wellington Street. Participants will travel east along Wellington, passing key landmarks such as Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal, before heading north on Sussex Drive to the vibrant ByWard Market. “This is more than just a parade – it’s a celebration of 200 years of Irish contributions to building this great city,” the Irish Society stated on its Facebook page.
The previous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ottawa was held in 2019. Subsequent events faced cancellations due to various challenges. The parade planned for 2020 was called off because of the pandemic, while the 2023 event was cancelled due to a shortage of volunteers and funding. Additionally, the 2024 parade did not proceed as organizers were unable to secure a parade permit.
Organizers faced significant hurdles in recent years, including increased costs associated with hosting the event. For instance, the estimated policing costs for a parade along Elgin Street exceeded $35,000, contributing to the decision to cancel previous parades.
With the upcoming event, the Irish Society hopes to reinvigorate community spirit and foster cultural appreciation. The return of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is not only a festive occasion but also an opportunity to highlight the enduring legacy of the Irish community in Ottawa. As preparations move forward, excitement builds within the community for this long-awaited celebration.
