Oxfam-Québec Reacts to Israel’s NGO Ban in Gaza
Canadian non-profit Oxfam-Québec has expressed surprise at being named among 37 organizations that Israel plans to bar from operating in Gaza. Reports indicate that Israel is set to suspend the activities of over two dozen humanitarian organizations starting in January 2024.
Background of the Ban
The decision to restrict these organizations comes in the context of ongoing tensions in the region. Israel has cited security concerns as the primary reason for this sweeping measure, particularly regarding groups it believes may support or facilitate activities linked to terrorism. The list of barred NGOs includes a mix of local and international entities that have been providing essential humanitarian assistance to the population in Gaza.
Oxfam-Québec, which has been active in the region, aims to provide aid and support to vulnerable communities, focusing on food security and health care. The organization stated that it is currently reviewing its options and assessing the implications of this ban on its operations.
Response from Oxfam-Québec
In a statement released shortly after the announcement, Oxfam-Québec expressed deep concern over the impact this ban could have on humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The organization emphasized the critical need for continued support and assistance to the region, especially given the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting millions.
“We are shocked and disappointed by this decision,” said a spokesperson for Oxfam-Québec. “Our mission is to alleviate suffering, and this ban undermines our ability to do that effectively.”
The organization is now exploring diplomatic avenues to challenge the ban and ensure that humanitarian efforts can continue without interruption. They are also urging international partners and stakeholders to advocate for the lifting of such restrictions, highlighting the dire situation faced by Gazans.
As discussions around humanitarian access intensify, Oxfam-Québec is calling for a renewed commitment to international humanitarian law, which mandates that aid be allowed to reach those in need without obstruction.
The situation continues to evolve, and the international community is closely monitoring the implications of Israel’s decision on both the ground realities in Gaza and the broader humanitarian landscape.
