Pelham Unveils New Name for Community Centre Concession Stand
The concession stand at the Meridian Community Centre (MCC) has officially adopted the name **Cook’s Corner**, a title selected from 35 entries in a naming contest launched by the Town of Pelham in September 2023. The new name reflects both the stand’s location and pays homage to a historic neighbourhood once known as Cook’s Corners, which referred to a small community at the intersection of Metler Road and Balfour Street in the late 19th century.
In a media release, the Town of Pelham announced that the winning name was submitted by **Shandie Persaud** and **Robert McMullan**. The name **Cook’s Corner** was chosen for its representation of the concession’s “around the corner” spot within the MCC, making it a fitting identity for the community hub.
Community Engagement and Initiatives
Kristina Clint, the manager of recreation, culture, and wellness, expressed enthusiasm for the new name, highlighting its welcoming nature. “Cook’s Corner is a welcoming spot for residents and visitors alike with a menu shaped by community input,” Clint stated. “It’s a great place to gather, relax, and refuel while enjoying all that the Meridian Community Centre offers.”
On the same day as the naming celebration, **Cook’s Corner** launched a community initiative called “Fries on Us.” This program encourages residents to donate non-perishable food items to **Pelham Cares**. In appreciation of their contributions, donors will receive a voucher for a complimentary side of fries during their next visit to the concession stand.
Executive Director **Gayle Sears** of Pelham Cares expressed gratitude for the support from the community, noting that such initiatives enrich the local spirit. “Pelham Cares is most grateful for its support during the season; it is such a generous and fun way to support us and certainly everyone wins,” Sears said.
The introduction of **Cook’s Corner** not only enhances the identity of the concession stand but also reinforces the sense of community within Pelham. By linking its name to local history and encouraging community involvement through initiatives like “Fries on Us,” the MCC continues to serve as a vital gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
